Haven’t you heard that the Dow is at 50,000? No? Well, I’ve had about my fill of the sordid story, but it seems we have no choice but to see this thing through. There are plenty of people going through the files, speculating about redactions, and making lists, charts, and data visualizers to represent it all. I said most of what I have to say about the topic in my Epstein series, and there are better people to follow than me for deep dives on the personal, financial, and organizational revelations in the recently released files. In any case, I have no doubt that what’s been released only provides a small and probably misleading look at the whole picture, and I’d rather wait until the info dump has settled down to say much about it. Instead, I want to talk about the broader issues at play, and that means finally sharing my favorite schizo theory.

<a It’s the Festival of Summer, and the seaside town is decorated for celebration. Men contentedly put their hands to their tasks, mothers with babies smiled as they chatted with one another in the park. Groups of people dance and play instruments, dressed brightly and trailing streamers behind them.

“They were not simple folk,” Le Guin wrote, “though they were happy. But we do not say the words of cheer much any more. All smiles have become archaic. Given a description such as this one tends to make certain assumptions. Given a description such as this one tends to look next for the King, mounted on a splendid stallion and surrounded by his noble knights, or perhaps in a golden litter borne by great-muscled slaves. But there was no king. They did not use swords, or keep slaves. They were not barbarians. I do not know the rules and laws of their society, but I suspect that they were singularly few. As they did without monarchy and slavery, so they also got on without the stock exchange, the advertisement, the secret police, and the bomb. Yet I repeat that these were not simple folk, not dulcet shepherds, noble savages, bland utopians. They were not less complex than us.”

Then Le Guin makes plain that she is dealing in fantasy, admitting her illustration may not suit every reader, and encouraging us to imagine the town and its people as we would like our utopia to be. We follow the joyous procession near to its end, caught up in the reverie of no place, wilfully ignoring the impossibility of the vision, when Le Guin the dark sorceress reveals her magic.

“Do you believe? Do you accept the festival, the city, the joy? No? Then let me describe one more thing. In a basement under one of the beautiful public buildings of Omelas, or perhaps in the cellar of one of its spacious private homes, there is a room. It has one locked door, and no window. A little light seeps in dustily between cracks in the boards, secondhand from a cobwebbed window somewhere across the cellar. In one corner of the little room a couple of mops, with stiff, clotted, foul-smelling heads, stand near a rusty bucket. The floor is dirt, a little damp to the touch, as cellar dirt usually is. The room is about three paces long and two wide: a mere broom closet or disused tool room. In the room a child is sitting. It could be a boy or a girl. It looks about six, but actually is nearly ten. It is feeble-minded. Perhaps it was born defective or perhaps it has become imbecile through fear, malnutrition, and neglect. It picks its nose and occasionally fumbles vaguely with its toes or genitals, as it sits hunched in the corner farthest from the bucket and the two mops. It is afraid of the mops. It finds them horrible. It shuts its eyes, but it knows the mops are still standing there; and the door is locked; and nobody will come. The door is always locked; and nobody ever comes, except that sometimes-the child has no understanding of time or interval – sometimes the door rattles terribly and opens, and a person, or several people, are there. One of them may come and kick the child to make it stand up. The others never come close, but peer in at it with frightened, disgusted eyes. The food bowl and the water jug are hastily filled, the door is locked, the eyes disappear. The people at the door never say anything, but the child, who has not always lived in the tool room, and can remember sunlight and its mother’s voice, sometimes speaks. “I will be good,” it says. “Please let me out. I will be good!” They never answer. The child used to scream for help at night, and cry a good deal, but now it only makes a kind of whining, “eh-haa, eh-haa,” and it speaks less and less often. It is so thin there are no calves to its legs; its belly protrudes; it lives on a half-bowl of corn meal and grease a day. It is naked. Its buttocks and thighs are a mass of festered sores, as it sits in its own excrement continually. They all know it is there, all the people of Omelas. Some of them have come to see it, others are content merely to know it is there. They all know that it has to be there. Some of them understand why, and some do not, but they all understand that their happiness, the beauty of their city, the tenderness of their friendships, the health of their children, the wisdom of their scholars, the skill of their makers, even the abundance of their harvest and the kindly weathers of their skies, depend wholly on this child’s abominable misery. This is usually explained to children when they are between eight and twelve, whenever they seem capable of understanding; and most of those who come to see the child are young people, though often enough an adult comes, or comes back, to see the child. No matter how well the matter has been explained to them, these young spectators are always shocked and sickened at the sight. They feel disgust, which they had thought themselves superior to. They feel anger, outrage, impotence, despite all the explanations. They would like to do something for the child. But there is nothing they can do. If the child were brought up into the sunlight out of that vile place, if it were cleaned and fed and comforted, that would be a good thing, indeed; but if it were done, in that day and hour all the prosperity and beauty and delight of Omelas would wither and be destroyed. Those are the terms. To exchange all the goodness and grace of every life in Omelas for that single, small improvement: to throw away the happiness of thousands for the chance of the happiness of one: that would be to let guilt within the walls indeed. The terms are strict and absolute; there may not even be a kind word spoken to the child. Often the young people go home in tears, or in a tearless rage, when they have seen the child and faced this terrible paradox. They may brood over it for weeks or years. But as time goes on they begin to realize that even if the child could be released, it would not get much good of its freedom: a little vague pleasure of warmth and food, no doubt, but little more. It is too degraded and imbecile to know any real joy. It has been afraid too long ever to be free of fear. Its habits are too uncouth for it to respond to humane treatment. Indeed, after so long it would probably be wretched without walls about it to protect it, and darkness for its eyes, and its own excrement to sit in. Their tears at the bitter injustice dry when they begin to perceive the terrible justice of reality, and to accept it. Yet it is their tears and anger, the trying of their generosity and the acceptance of their helplessness, which are perhaps the true source of the splendor of their lives. Theirs is no vapid, irresponsible happiness. They know that they, like the child, are not free. They know compassion. It is the existence of the child, and their knowledge of its existence, that makes possible the nobility of their architecture, the poignancy of their music, the profundity of their science. It is because of the child that they are so gentle with children. They know that if the wretched one were not there snivelling in the dark, the other one, the flute-player, could make no joyful music as the young riders line up in their beauty for the race in the sunlight of the first morning of summer. Now do you believe in them? Are they not (now) more credible?”

What’s wonderful about a story like this is that it works at almost any level you feel like playing at. You can read it psychologically, as each of us must subdue the free and naive children we once were in order to survive and remain presentable in the adult world. Politically, every society seems to grease the skids of internal cohesion by projecting its collective hatred onto an Other outside or at the bottom of their polity. Or we could understand it culturally. Every culture has skeletons hiding in plain sight which, stripped of the familiarity we’ve developed for them over a lifetime of close contact and indoctrination, would appear as monstrous as they in fact often are. Secular activists in the West are morally and ethically appalled at the Christian resistance to gay marriage and abortion, but almost nobody seems very concerned about the fact that those Christians all gather on Sundays to worship a victim of torture and execution, and to eat his flesh and drink his blood (and it’s a good thing, because I doubt they’d have the patience to sit through an explanation of how the sublimated symbolic act is what frees us from the impulse to satisfy it literally).

From primitive tribes to great civilizations, human beings through time and across the world have entertained the notion that the universe somehow feeds on suffering, and confers power upon whoever brings it a meal. From Polynesia to West Africa, from Papua New Guinea to the Yucatan, countless creation myths begin with the sacrifice of a god, whose blood must be repaid by ritual reenactments from the human benefactors. The blood-drenched Mesoamerican civilization encountered by the Spanish conquistadors in the 16th century is perhaps the most famous recent example of a society built on human sacrifice.

<picture></picture>

The Aztecs gave blood, their own and that of others, to the gods on an almost unlimited number and variety of occasions. Most have heard something about their “flower wars” with other Mesoamerican towns and cities, during which both sides did their best not to land killing blows on the enemy, but to disable him so that he could be made a captive destined for death on the sacrificial stone. Killing enemies in battle brought a warrior little glory in Mesoamerican societies, but they were greatly rewarded for bringing captives back to the city to die on the sacrificial stone. The Mesoamerican religious calendar was full of holidays drenched in the blood of sacrifice victims, and, at the end of each calendrical cycle, whole cities performed rituals and stood vigil throughout the night to see if they’d given the gods enough blood to persuade them to permit the sunrise and the start of a new cycle. If not, the sun would remain beneath the horizon, and the world would end in a horrific manner with which psychologists would have a field day.

For reasons I laid out in Martyr Made #8 - How to Serve Man, I believe that ritual murder (human sacrifice) had its place in the history of virtually all societies. At one time, ritual murder represented a step toward civilization, since it attaches symbolic meaning to an act which, perpetrated against any other species, would be mere labor, mere butchery. Animals kill and eat, only humans sacrifice and feast. Ritual transforms animal aggression and casual sadism into a conscious act of human will. We have a few examples of societies who seem to have viewed the act of killing (at least killing members of the outgroup) with little more significance than slaughtering a pig, and it’s not pretty. Take, for example, the Tugarian people of New Guinea. Savage, warlike, and gratuitously cruel, they took long canoes along the coast and up the rivers, terrorizing more peaceful villages like stone age Vikings. To ensure a steady supply of food during their months-long raiding expeditions, they brought along captives whose arms and legs had been broken to prevent escape, but who were kept alive so that their meat would stay fresh until it was needed. The Tugarian warriors cut off the prisoners’ body parts as needed, but treated the wounds and tried to keep their mobile meat lockers alive as long as possible. That is one of the more primitive examples of regularized cannibalism you’ll find, but even here the consumption of human flesh was set about with taboos, superstitions, and prophylactic rules.

The offensive line is an intricate system whose purpose is to protect the quarterback and open up rushing lanes, and when a system is functioning properly, we hardly even notice it’s there. We are all embedded in, and dependent upon, systems that are largely invisible to us until they break down.

Today, systems seem to be breaking down all around us, or transforming at a pace with which it’s almost impossible to keep up. International institutions are being deconstructed, the nation state is being hollowed out, and things that used to just be taken for granted as part of life - jobs, family, community, etc - are now “problems” for which we’re all seeking solutions.

There’s no one I’d rather talk to about this than John Robb. Some of you old schoolers may remember the interview I did with him a few years ago. John is the author of Brave New War, a seminal book on War on Terror, and the changing face of warfare with the advent of technologies that allow small groups, even individuals, to disrupt the operations of states and corporations. John is a tech founder who was on the team that created RSS (so if you’re listening to this as a podcast, you can thank him for it), and was a special operator in the US Air Force. In 2017, at my urging, he started the Global Guerillas newsletter, where he discusses current events in a comprehensive, multidisciplinary way that focuses on systems, rather than simply reacting to the daily news cycle. In this interview, we discuss everything mentioned above, and we spend a long time on the implications of artificial intelligence, a subject of which John is uniquely knowledgeable. Enjoy!

Enemy, episode 2 update: I’m done with my reading. Now I’m organizing all my material and beginning to write it out. Won’t be too long now, I promise.

I’m not a bar guy, not really a large crowds of any kind guy, for that matter, but he’d been pestering us about it for weeks, so finally we agreed, and headed down to a place called Scolari’s Office, in the North Park neighborhood of San Diego. We were only going along so he’d stop asking, and figured we could bow out after our buddy got his turn on the mic. So we get there, and not only is it a full-on sausage fest, but everyone there is in some version of the black boots, black punk band t-shirt, spike studded belt uniform popular among people who never outgrew their Hot Topic phase. My roommate and I had only gone grudgingly, so our clothes were hardly more than pajamas - basketball shorts and flip flops, basically - and we stuck out like a sore thumb. No problem, it wasn’t like we were there to make new friends, so we located a spot near the bar where we could hunker down and get through the night. A fourth guy had come along as well. Our friend who’d invited us had brought him along, and my roommate and I were just meeting him for the first time. This guy was a Marine, he stood 5’6”, maybe 5’7”, muscled like a bodybuilder, shaved head, tribal armband, and he carried himself exactly the way those details make him sound.

So anyway, before we even get to the bar, this Marine won’t stop talking about how he hoped someone at the bar would get froggy so he could kick some ass, how he just couldn’t wait to fight someone, and anyone who wants to step to him is gonna be sorry, blah blah blah, you know the type. He’s still talking like that once we get to the bar. Well, I’m not drinking because I’m the designated driver, and my roommate isn’t drinking because he had recently discovered a blood clot behind his eye, and the medication they gave him made his blood so thin that alcohol was out of the question. Well, just our luck, our buddy doesn’t get his turn on the mic in the first hour. Or the second hour. And eventually it’s after 1 am and we’re wondering if we’ve been sucking back plain soda water at a shitty bar all night for nothing. Our karaoke friend and his Marine buddy were getting hammered, though, and from our stationary vantage point we watched the two of them ping pong around the crowd, mingling, buying drinks for people, all that malarkey you people get up to at the disco.

So, I’m in that part of the process where all I have to do is pound through a big stack of books. Last year, I put a lot of effort into keeping up a steady stream of content here on the Substack, but diverting myself in that way was a big reason that the episode took as long as it did to complete. This time around, I am making the new episode my first priority to make sure that doesn’t happen again. I will still do my best to put out regular content - I’ve planned some interviews with interesting people, and will be writing about religion, culture, great books, and other topics I know well and can do without having to dedicate precious hours to research beforehand. Thank you again to everyone who continues to support the podcast by subscribing. I’m humbled by it every day, and I’m truly grateful.

Everyone knows that the First World War began on July 28, 1914, when the Austro-Hungarian Empire declared war on Serbia, and ended on November 11, 1918, when Germany signed the armistice agreement. Everyone knows that World War 2 began on September 1, 1939, when Hitler invaded Poland, and ended on May 8, 1945, when Germany surrendered to the Allies. Well, just as a map is not the same as the territory it represents, history is an approximate image of the events it describes, and the markings on both, though necessary to make the decipherable at all, are often arbitrary.

If you ask a Chinese man, the Second World War began on July 7, 1937, when Japan launched a full-scale invasion of the mainland, or even back in 1931, when Japan moved on Manchuria. The war between Japan and the United States officially began on December 7, 1941, with the bombing of Pearl Harbor, but many Japanese at the time would have said the war began in late July of that year, when President Roosevelt froze Japan’s assets and imposed an oil and gasoline embargo. The act deprived Japan of 94% of its oil and gasoline supplies, forcing the Japanese to either beat an ignominious retreat out of China, or else go to war with the Allies to secure new energy sources in the East Indies. A Ukrainian or Lithuanian might tell you that the Second World War dragged on into the 1950s, when their partisans were finally forced to give up their fight against the Soviet Union.

The lines bounding the First World War are similarly blurred. People living in the Balkans might point out that their fight did not begin in 1914, but in 1912, when Greece, Serbia, Montenegro, and Bulgaria went to war with the Ottoman Empire. A Turk might note the fact that Italy, one of the Ottoman Empire’s opponents in the Great War, invaded and took Libya from them in 1911, and that Turkey would continue fighting in the Balkans and the Caucasus until 1923. A recurring theme is that the winners usually have a clearer and more consistent view of it than the losers, since losing a major war often inaugurates a period of chaos that is often hardly distinguishable from the war itself.

His name is Andrew Edwards, and the books are King of Dogs, and Crowbar. Anyone with a passing interest in fiction, or who used to enjoy fiction but hasn’t found anything worth the time lately, please check these books out.

I recently read his new book, Crowbar, and it’s been lodged in my brain ever since. The story is complex, dark, not for the faint of heart. Most fiction these days is read by, and written for, women and children, but not Edwards’s novels.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" Robert Maxwell, MKULTRA-style rogue intel ops, shadowy cults... a mindf*ck, as the kids used to say), but I was so struck by the quality of the writing that I started re-reading his first book, King of Dogs, as soon as I put Crowbar down. I had read King of Dogs some time ago, but it’s even better than I remember. Near-future America experiencing a Soviet-style slow-burn collapse, as private military contractors, cartels, militias, and gangs fight to monopolize territory and resources. And that’s just the setting - the story is about loyalty, honor, and commitment, and somehow Edwards pulls that off without ever being corny.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

I’m not joking. Jews who adhere to the golden rule, and don’t believe in collective punishment, are an example. We are compatible with the West and do well in it without needing or wanting to rig the system in our own favor. We want a level playing field. But obviously many American Jews are not of this mindset. For golden-rule believing Jews, it is galling to be lumped in with those threatening the West by endlessly attempting to rig the system.

Some populations who initially applied the update, self-described Christians, are now applying patches that revert the core OS back to the pre-updated state. They are explicitly inclined to rig the system in favor of their lineages, despite that being a distinctly un-Christian thing to do. White nationalist Christians are an example of this. It’s an Old Testament mindset with Christian aesthetics and rhetoric.

As usual, Bret is onto something important here, but there’s a lot to unpack. The “ancient cultural operating system” he describes is summed up by the Arab proverb: I against my brother, I and my brother against my cousin, I, my brother, and my cousin against the world. This mentality is antithetical to the smooth functioning of the modern West’s chief institution, the nation state. In a previous essay, we discussed the difficulties faced by traditional societies trying to make the leap in Papua New Guinea.

The landscape of Papua New Guinea is extremely forbidding - high, steep mountains covered with thick tropical rainforests - and has long been an insurmountable natural barrier to political consolidation on the large island. The prospect of any single center of authority exercising power over the entire island was was nonexistent in premodern times when feet were the primary means of transportation... Even contact and interchange from one valley to the next was a tall task, and isolated microsocieties grew up all over Papua New Guinea. Over 900 mutually-incomprehensible languages are spoken on the island - one-sixth of all the world’s still-existing languages… In the Papua New Guinea highlands, most people will live their entire lives in the mountain valley in which they were born. Their social world consists of their segmentary lineage group (that is, those who share a common male ancestor), and the nearby lineages with whom their group is in dialogue or conflict.

These lineage groups, which may comprise a few dozen to a few thousand people, are called wantoks, a pidgin version of the English words “one talk” - people who speak the same language. Each wantok is led by a chief, a Big Man. Big Man is not an inherited office, but a position of responsibility and authority bestowed by community acclimation. If, in times of conflict, the Big Men tend to be physically-powerful warriors, in other times the position may be held by more physically average men who have garnered great respect and trust among their people, particularly for their ability to distribute pigs, shell money, and other goods to those who follow them.

Until the 1970s, Papua New Guinea was under the political control of Australia. When the colonizers departed, they thought to give the people a helpful shove along their path toward modernity by designing and empowering an elected multiparty parliamentary system of government. The result, as you might have guessed, was chaos.

Voters in Melanesia do not vote according to policy preferences or political ideology. They vote to install the Big Man of their wantok into the national parliament or some other position from which he will be able to direct state largesse back to his own people. The elected Big Man understands his duty to extract as many resources as possible to benefit his friends and family, without regard for the well-being of a larger nation state with which neither he nor his people feel any real sense of collective identity.

To people accustomed to a Western system of government, it is the definition of corruption for a politician to use his position to direct benefits to his friends and family; in Papua New Guinea, it is simply the way things are, and both voters and elected officials would have trouble comprehending why or how it would be otherwise.

This is the “ancient cultural operating system” at work. In Papua New Guinea, it is not only tolerated, but virtuous, to rig the system in favor of one’s own people. Bret correctly points out that this is incompatible with the modern West, but is it incompatible with the New Testament? After all, for 1,500 years, societies from Byzantium to Medieval Spain were founded on the principles of the New Testament without bearing any resemblance to the modern West. Although the principles Bret points to as the basis of the modern West - a level playing field, individual equality under the law, etc. - can, perhaps, be credibly derived from Christianity, what he is describing is merely liberalism. I asked Bret about this, and he said that he sees liberalism as the political instantiation of the New Testament system update. It brought to mind something I read by a Jewish writer - maybe Paul Berman, maybe an old Nathan Glazer bit, I can’t remember. Whoever it was, he said that the true religion of American Jewry is not Judaism, but liberalism. Or, according to Bret’s formulation, Christianity without Christ. That is what Bret means when he says that “some (Jews) who have retained the trappings of the ancient cultural operating system have quietly accepted the fundamentals of the updated system.”

Christianity without Christ sounds like an oxymoron, of course, but let’s play around with the idea a bit. After all, Jesus obtained his understanding without ever reading the New Testament, nor do the Gospels say that he became who he was by way of special revelation. In fact, Jesus was clear that everything necessary to know him was already present in the Jewish tradition in which he was raised. Christ could only have come from the Jews. Alone among all the world’s peoples, the Jews kept a record not only of their triumphs, but their defeats and catastrophes. Indeed, their defeats and catastrophes have more emotional valence in the minds of most Jews than their victories. Dwelling on your negative experiences can veer into the pathological, but empathy for the weak and victimized is most strongly rooted when you have a sense of what they’re going through - when you’re able to say, “That could’ve been me,” because at some point in the remembered past, it was you. No other society of which I’m aware went to such lengths to preserve the memory of their disasters. You read about the Assyrians, how they rose and drove their enemies before them until they were rulers of the known world, then you read about the Babylonians rising to destroy the Assyrian Empire. Next, you read about the rise of the Persians’ Achaemenid Empire, and their conquest of Babylon, and the Babylonians follow the Assyrians down the memory hole. Every defeat was told from the perspective of the victorious successor. Their traditions, the traditions of all the pagan nations, taught them to worship strength, despise weakness, and to view personal or collective suffering as a sign of the gods’ disfavor. This is what Paul meant when he said that the Gospel sounded like nonsense to the Gentiles, according to whose worldview a crucified criminal was by definition a loser, discarded by the gods and certainly unworthy of the sympathy of respectable people. I’m an old comparative religion nerd, so I find a lot to love about most of the world’s religions, but it’s a fact that only the Jews could have given us the sentiment expressed in Isaiah’s Songs of the Servant:

Who has believed what he has heard from us?

And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?

For he grew up before him like a young shoot,

and like a root out of barren ground;

he had no form or majesty for which we should regard him,

and no beauty that we should desire him.

He was despised and rejected by men,

a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief;

and as one from whom men hide their faces,

he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

Surely he has borne our grief

and carried our sorrows;

yet we called him cursed,

smitten by God, and afflicted.

But he was pierced for our transgressions;

he was crushed for our iniquities;

upon him was the punishment that brought us peace,

and by his wounds are we healed.

We, like sheep, have gone astray;

We have turned, every one, to his own way;

and the Lord has laid on him the inquiry of us all.

If you can write that, you can grok the Christian ethic without having to hear it from Jesus or the apostles. It was Christ who awakened the pagan nations to the suffering of the poor and downtrodden, and Christ is our necessary reminder that God is closest to those whom the world has abandoned and despised. Jews alone, I believe, were and are able to know these truths on their own - Christianity without Christ. After all, everything necessary to know and understand Jesus Christ is contained in that passage from Isaiah.

Don’t hear what I’m not saying. There is more to Christianity than the Christian ethic, so I’m not pushing some hackneyed dual covenant theology. (I’m not pushing anything at all, and I hope everyone always keeps that in mind. I’m not your pastor. We’re all friends here, just having a friendly conversation.) My point, though, is that the Jewish tradition contained all the necessary elements for the Christian worldview.

When Paul said that the Gospel was nonsense to the Gentiles, he followed it up by saying that it is a “stumbling block” to the Jews. “Stumbling block” is a translation of the Greek skandalon, which is used throughout the New Testament to describe something that causes one to sin. Why would the Gospel cause the Jews to sin? We have a hint in Romans chapter 11, when Paul tells the church in Rome that salvation being offered to the Gentiles “has made Israel jealous.” Jealousy and envy are often used interchangeably in day-to-day speech, but they are not the same. Envy means you want what someone else has, but jealousy means that you are afraid someone will take what you have. The Jews felt cheated by the invitation to salvation extended to people they thought of as enemies and oppressors. They had been expecting a warrior Messiah who would end the exile by leading them to military victory over the nations. What they got was a Messiah to lead them out of the exile by making peace and bringing them into communion with the nations.

It’s easy to understand why they reacted the way they did. After all, who doesn’t sympathize with the faithful older brother in the story of the Prodigal Son? He remained home under his father’s discipline while his dissolute brother wandered the earth, and he felt like he had earned a special place in his father’s heart. When his destitute brother returned home, the brother’s refusal to join the celebration and pretend like nothing had happened was not the correct response, but it was a very human one. In another parable, Jesus described a man who was hired to work in a vineyard. He was hired in the morning, and promised a denarius for a full day’s work. Throughout the day, the vineyard owner hires more workers for the same pay promised to the one hired at dawn. At the end of the day, everyone received one denarius, even though some had only worked a half day, and others had been hired barely an hour before day’s end. Naturally, the man hired in the morning objected, saying that he had done more than the rest, and should be compensated for it. The owner tells the upset worker that he was happy with his pay when he agreed to it in the morning, and nothing has been taken from him by paying others the same. The owner, in this case, is God, so we won’t argue with him, but part of us, the human part, shares the worker’s sense that he was somehow cheated.

Modern Christians often emphasize the parables’ purpose as instruction to the individual believer. Those who were raised in the church, for example, may see themselves as the older brother, who must not judge or resent those who come into the church later, after years of living in sin. Conversely, those who came into the church later may see themselves as the Prodigal Son, and be comforted by the lesson that nothing in their past had diminished God’s love for them. No doubt the stories can and should be read as timeless lessons to the individual, but it’s easy to forget that Jesus was not only speaking to the whole world through the Bible, he was standing before real people, in a specific time and place - first century Jews at a very critical point in their national history.

The Stumbling Block

Many people, even those who went to Sunday School as kids, only know a rough summary of the story told in the Old Testament, so I hope those of you who know the story well will indulge me for a minute.

(OK, I started telling the story from the beginning, and typed two full pages before I was done with the Book of Genesis. For your sake and mine, let’s begin with the founding of the Kingdom of Israel.)

So Moses has led the people out of Egypt, Joshua has led them on a genocidal conquest of Canaan, and the Israelites are finally settling down in the Promised Land. But enemies threaten on every front. They hadn’t managed to kill every Canaanite man, woman, and child, so they had the survivors to worry about. Beyond their new borders were powerful kingdoms and empires - Hittites, Egyptians, Mesopotamians, and more - as well as bandits, and swarms of seafaring raiders. In order to better deal with these challenges, the people went to God’s prophet and demanded that he appoint a king. The prophet, Samuel, warned them against it, saying that although it may seem expedient today, they’ll regret it tomorrow, when their ruler is conscripting their sons for his army, and their daughters for his harem. They insist, and so God gives them a king. The first king, Saul, doesn’t last, but the second king, David, establishes a real kingdom, based in Jerusalem, in the territory allotted to his tribe, Judah.

Samuel’s warnings were almost immediately validated. Most of the kings are bad rulers. The first prophetic book, Amos, written in the 8th century BC, bemoans the decadent society Israel has become, and the oppression of the poor by the rich and powerful. Strife between the tribes leads the ten northern kingdoms to renounce their loyalty to the king in Jerusalem. Finally, the powerful Assyrian empire sets upon them, laying siege to the capital of the northern kingdom, and finally destroying it around 721 BC. Next, the Assyrians made for Jerusalem, but political strife back home forced them to abandon the siege before it was consummated. The two remaining tribal fiefdoms, Judah and Benjamin, took this as proof of God’s favor. Before long, though, more prophets appeared to warn the people that they, too, had displeased God, and would soon be destroyed unless they changed their ways. The chief complaint of the prophets was that the Jews (the people of Judah) were too open and friendly to the foreign peoples among whom they lived. The most popular metaphor for their behavior is a whoring wife, and God promises in long, lurid passages to do to the Jews what any cuckolded husband would have done in the Iron Age Near East. A few kings heeded the warnings, but most didn’t, and in the 6th century BC, God sent the Babylonians to finish the job started by the Assyrians. The Babylonians destroyed Jerusalem and tore down the Jews’ temple to Yahweh. The leadership class of Jerusalem was exiled to live near Babylon, where they could be more easily monitored. The leaders of the ten northern tribes had been exiled in similar fashion by the Assyrians, and, without their leaders, the people who remained behind intermarried and assimilated to the people around them. Those left behind in Judah did the same once their leaders were out of the picture. The Babylonians’ victory was short-lived, however. Less than a century later, the Persians crushed the Babylonians, and issued an edict permitting the Jews to return to Jerusalem and rebuild it as a vassal state to the Persian emperor. It wasn’t independence, but it was better than nothing.

The Babylonian exile had a profound reactionary effect on Jewish culture. The question that dominated the period was how the chosen people, God’s beloved, could have fallen into such a sorry state. Ten of the twelve tribes of Israel had been destroyed and lost to history. The remaining two had been conquered and subjugated. The holy temple, God’s house on earth, had been reduced to rubble. How could this be? One loud and aggressive faction thought they knew the answer. It was not that God lacked the power to protect them, or that He had merely allowed them to be conquered. In fact, it was He who had sent the Babylonians to destroy Jerusalem as punishment for the Jews’ infidelity. This faction had always been a vocal minority, denouncing the people and ruling elites for being too tolerant of the surrounding nations.1

They were viewed by most as an extremist faction, and rarely had the ear of those in power. After the exile, however, the fundamentalists had a more receptive audience, in the same way that reactionary Muslims denouncing the cosmopolitanism of the Islamic world took center stage after the Mongol conquests. This idea became dominant among the Jews, and sweeping edits and redactions to the Old Testament were made during and after the exile to reflect the view that openness to the corrupting influence of foreigners was the cardinal sin, the one violation that would cause God to forget His promises and bring the Jews to ruin.

Still, while this xenophobic idea became the basis of Jewish religion during the Second Temple period, the fanatics remained a minority (as they are in virtually every society). Thus, when the Persians defeated the Babylonians and permitted the Jews to return to Jerusalem, only a minority of the Jews in Babylon actually went. After all, every Jew under 70 years old had been born and built their lives in Babylon, and the idea of leaving the functional center of civilization to rebuild a town in a provincial backwater - well, they sent well-wishes to anyone who chose to go, but the vast majority had no desire to go themselves. The ones who did go were not a random cross-section of Babylonian-Jewish society. They were the extremists, the hardened xenophobes who’d been preaching the necessity of cultural and blood purity. You might liken them to the hardcore religious Israeli settlers expanding into Palestinian land in the West Bank. Not only is it dangerous, but it’s far from the shopping centers in Tel Aviv, so a settler has to be very committed to the cause. The Jews returning to Jerusalem from Babylon were cut from similar cloth.

When they returned, however, they were dismayed at what they found. The Jews who had been left behind - which meant the vast majority of them - had been on their own for 70 years, and had begun to assimilate and intermarry with the people around them. The two Old Testament books that deal with the return to Jerusalem, Ezra and Nehemiah, are preoccupied with the returning fanatics’ campaign against these people:

After these things had been done, the leaders came to me and said, “The people of Israel, including the priests and the Levites, have not kept themselves separate from the neighboring peoples with their detestable practices, like those of the Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Jebusites, Ammonites, Moabites, Egyptians and Amorites. They have taken some of their daughters as wives for themselves and their sons, and have mingled the holy race with the peoples around them…

Seeing this, Ezra tore his clothes and threw himself to the ground in propitiatory prayer:

For we have forsaken the commands you gave through your servants the prophets when you said: ‘The land you are entering to possess is a land polluted by the corruption of its peoples. By their detestable practices they have filled it with their impurity from one end to the other. Therefore, do not give your daughters in marriage to their sons or take their daughters for your sons. Do not seek a treaty of friendship with them at any time, that you may be strong and eat the good things of the land and leave it to your children as an everlasting inheritance.’

Ezra and his retinue called the people to repentance, ordering them to divorce their foreign wives and disown their children. The Book of Ezra even takes care to list the names of the bloodlines that had been corrupted. Many agreed, but others, of course, resisted. They had been surviving for 70 years, and here a group of religious fanatics from Babylon had shown up and ordered them to break up their families. The Persian emperor, however, had granted the returned exiles political authority over Jerusalem and the surrounding region, so those who refused to abandon their families were simply cast out of the Jewish community.

Jerusalem and the Temple were rebuilt with funding and support from the Persian state. Still, many lamented that even though they were back in Jerusalem, they were nonetheless under the thumb of a foreign king who proclaimed himself the representative of God on earth. Jerusalem and her temple had been restored, but were a shadow of their former glory. Was this the promised restoration, or was there still another redemption yet to come?

They didn’t have long to ponder that question, though. Before long, Alexander the Great and his invincible Greek armies swept the Persians off the board. Jerusalem passed from one suzerain to another, only now without the privileges they had enjoyed under the Persians.2 After Alexander died, his empire was divided among his top generals. Jerusalem was first ruled from Egypt by the Ptolemies, before passing to the Seleucids.

The Jews’ religious xenophobia made them a very hard people to rule over. The Hellenistic period saw unprecedented cultural exchange from India in the east, all the way to the Maghreb and Europe in the west. People were coming into contact with foreigners like never before. To a society intensely focused on racial and religious purity, this was not viewed as a time of opportunity, but of great danger. One of the main ways of building cultural bridges was by honoring the gods and customs of others. Refusing to do so was akin to an individual refusing to shake your hand, or, a country refusing to establish diplomatic relations with another. Jews, of course, were not only forbidden from paying respect to other peoples’ gods, they were increasingly barred from any kind of contact at all. As in any society, people varied in their degree of religious observance, but the devout Jew believed that day-to-day contacts, such touching a non-Jew, entering their house, or eating with them polluted the Jew who did it. It’s no surprise, then, that the most consistent theme of non-Jews’ writings about Jews during this period has to do with their contempt for everyone else around them.3 The Greek historian Diodorus of Sicily, for example, complained that Jews “show good will toward none but their own.” A little later, the Roman Tacitus would record a similar criticism:

Among themselves they are inflexibly honest and ever ready to shew compassion, though they regard the rest of mankind with all the hatred of enemies. They sit apart at meals, they sleep apart, and though, as a nation, they are singularly prone to lust, they abstain from intercourse with foreign women; among themselves nothing is unlawful. Circumcision was adopted by them as a mark of difference from other men. Those who come over to their religion adopt the practice, and have this lesson first instilled into them, to despise all gods, to disown their country, and set at nought parents, children, and brethren.

It’s likely that accounts written by foreigners contained exaggerations and misunderstandings, but in any case the Jews were intensely insular and xenophobic, and this led to predictably bad relations with virtually all of their neighbors. When Paul said that the Jews had “made themselves the enemies of all mankind,” he wasn’t making an ontological observation, but a straightforward sociopolitical one. This all came to a head during the reign of the Seleucid king Antiochus IV, who determined to return the Jews’ insults with one of his own by placing a Greek idol in the innermost sanctum, the Holy of Holies, of the Jerusalem temple. Antiochus, though, had underestimated the Jews commitment to their bit. Under the brothers Maccabbee, Jerusalem rose up against their Greek rulers, fighting with fanatical abandon and eventually winning their independence for the first time since they were conquered by the Babylonians four centuries earlier. The moment of triumph was short-lived, however. Internal strife in Jerusalem eventually led to civil war, which raged until one faction asked the Roman general Pompeius Magnus to intervene on its behalf. Pompey was already in the process of pacifying the Levant on behalf of the Empire, and was happy to accept the invitation into Jerusalem. The Romans, like the Greeks before them, soon learned that the Jews were not easy to rule. They made unprecedented compromises with the Jews, exempting them from military service, making allowances for the Sabbath, and permitting them to avoid token differences to other gods, but these had little effect. By the time a boy child named Jesus was born of a virgin in a Bethlehem stable, the Romans still rule Judea, but the place is a tinderbox awaiting a match to ignite in rebellion. God had empowered the Maccabees to free them from the Greeks, so it was only a matter of time before He sent a new messiah to overthrow Roman rule and end the exile for good. The messiah would only come, however, if the Jews returned to strict observance of the ancient law. Violent factions such as the Zealots harassed, assaulted, and even assassinated other Jews suspected of collaborating with the Romans. Jews in Greek-majority regions, such as Jesus’ home of Nazareth, were viewed with suspicion by Jerusalem.

Revolution was in the air, and everyone knew that it could explode at any moment. This context is necessary to understand the hostile reaction of many Jews when a man from Nazareth came preaching reconciliation with the Gentiles. For the Pharisees and others, the Jews’ separateness had become an end in itself. They had made an idol out of their chosenness. To modern Christians, it is a matter of trivia that Jesus preached to Samaritans, healed Jew and Gentile alike, and ate with tax collectors (the hated arch-collaborators) in the homes of Gentiles. The messiah was supposed to lead them to bloody revenge against these people, not make peace with them. Jesus preached that he had not come to abolish the Law, but to fulfill it. The Law was not an end in itself, but had a purpose - to preserve the Jews as a people whose hearts were softened to those who suffer and mourn, those who are held in contempt and despised, for God’s messiah could only emerge from such a cultural matrix. The Jews were not chosen to be elevated above the rest of mankind. John the Baptist warns the Jews not to imagine that magic DNA guaranteed them a special relationship with God, saying, “Do not say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children of Abraham.” Jesus had come to end the exile, not by leading the Jews in conquest against the Gentiles, but by healing the rift between them once and for all. This was not what the Jews had expected, and certainly not what most of them wanted to hear. The narrative leading to Jesus’ judicial murder climaxes in the Jews’ demand that Pontius Pilate free the violent revolutionary, Barabbas, and crucify Jesus instead. The Jews’ fateful choice to follow Barabbas’s path of political rebellion, and reject Jesus’ message of spiritual reconciliation, led, within a generation of Jesus’ crucifixion, to rebel against Rome, and most of those who’d heard Jesus preach lived to see Jerusalem laid waste, and the second temple turned to rubble.

Jesus brought his message to the Jews first, because only the Jews had the necessary context to understand it and bring it to the nations. As we all know, his message was rejected by all but a few of his countrymen, but those few who did accept it spread the Gospels far and wide, so that before long there were more Gentile than Jewish Christians. As prophesied in the Jews’ own holy scriptures, a man claiming to be the messiah was indeed leading people of every nation to kneel before the God of Abraham. It was a compelling enough narrative that preventing their people from converting to Christianity became a preoccupation of Jewish leaders after the destruction of Jerusalem.

Bret’s “ancient cultural operating system” is fueled by a grudge. The Jewish liturgical calendar is dominated by ceremonies in remembrance of the wrongs done to them by Gentile nations. This was how they kept their people on the reservation for centuries when being Jewish often carried social and legal disabilities that could be wiped away for any Jew who converted to Christianity (or, later, Islam). In another essay, I remarked on a 2021 Pew poll of American Jews, asking what they considered to be the most important aspect of Jewish identity. Far and away the most common answer was “remembering the Holocaust.” Not religious observance, not even Zionism, but “remembering what the Gentiles have done to us.” Needless to say, I agree with Bret that many Christians - most of them acting in what they believe is a righteous defense of Christianity - are making the unfortunate decision to cast aside the New Testament “system update” and revert to the “ancient cultural operating system” by remembering, to the point of obsession, the wrongs they have suffered at the hands of others, and the revenge they will take once they gain the upper hand. Christianity simply has the opposite notion: “forget what others have done to you, forgive those who have wronged you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” It is a narrow path, difficult to traverse, but it is the only way out of the mental prison holding many Jews and Gentiles alike.

1

The idea that the Israelites were always monotheists, and that their dalliances with foreign gods were occasional indiscretions, is belied by the Bible itself. Just checking in as I pound through the last of this Enemy episode. There are a few parts that have been confounding me, and I’ve been struggling with how to fit them into this episode (where they belong) without derailing or over-extending the episode. I’ve been derailed myself since a very close immediate family member suddenly and unexpectedly passed away last week. But we had the memorial the other day, and my schedule will clear until I get this episode finished. From now until it’s done, I’ll be focused on it to the exclusion of other projects, work around the house, eating, showering, everything.

I wanted to check in because it’s been a while, and you guys have been very patient with me, but also because some of you asked me to comment on a minor incident with social media poster Michael Tracey. The whole thing is a stupid distraction, and I wasn’t going to give it the time of day, but I’ll address it since some of you have questions.

The Martyr Made Substack is a reader-supported publication. An immediate family member had very unexpectedly passed a day or two before, so I didn’t see the email at first. Then people who know me reached out to say Tracey was contacting them about it, and then he got my phone number and started calling me. I found the email, and wrote back to tell him I’d just lost an immediate family member and that we could discuss his questions some other time. He wrote back demanding to know when I’d answer his questions, and so, annoyed, I wrote back an said fine, if he was on a deadline or something, I’m sure whatever he writes will be fine, so just put me down for no comment, because this was the last thing I wanted to be thinking about just now. A friend got me to think better of that, so I wrote him again to say that I would reach out and answer his questions next week. On Wednesday of “next week” - in fact, the day I gave the eulogy at our loved one’s memorial - Tracey started posting sarcastically titled videos (“Where Oh Where Has Darryl Cooper Gone?,” etc.) pretending not to know where I was or what I was doing. At that point, I washed my hands of the situation. My policy has always been that I’ll talk to anyone who wants to talk about anything they want to talk about, as long as they approach me like an adult. If, on the other hand, someone comes at me looking for a bitchy internet cat fight, I mute/block and move on. I’m not some polished media operator, I’m a regular person. I grew up and live now in an environment where, if you insult another man publicly, without provocation, or get pushy after he’s told you he’s mourning an immediate family member, you’re not going to pwn3d online, you’re going to get the shit kicked out of you. I recognize that that is not an appropriate response for someone in my position, even if it is the right response in general, so my policy is to disengage and move on, and that’s what I did. I just don’t engage with people who can’t bother to conduct themselves with a modicum of class, and some slob in a wrinkled t-shirt talking shit about me on his couch doesn’t get to demand my immediate attention as if he’s Seymour Hersh chasing down a major Pentagon scandal.

But, like I said, a few of you have asked me to comment on the specific questions, and my respect for you outweighs my lack of it for Tracey. I’m not going to watch his interviews or be one of the few people who reads his Substack posts, and I don’t want to spend any more time on this than necessary, so I’ll stick to the pertinent questions he sent to my email (which I finally read yesterday).

I have to be honest, I expected a lot more. I won’t speculate about why Tracey has now dedicated weeks of his life to running cover for alleged pedophiles like Jeffrey Epstein and the Israeli government official recently caught soliciting sex from a minor in Las Vegas, but I at least expected that he’d found some serious holes in my story. As I mentioned in the Provoked episode Scott Horton and I recorded two hours before the Tucker interview, I was running on 40 hours without a wink of sleep (air travel issues), and wouldn’t have been surprised to learn that I misspoke or mixed some things up. As you heard in my interview with Ryan Dawson, when he corrected me regarding the question of whether Donald Barr had hired Epstein to his first job, I not only admitted my ignorance of the facts he presented, but highlighted it and thanked him for the correction. I don’t mind being wrong and learning new things. So I was disappointed to find that Tracey’s objections were nitpicky at best, and outright deceptive or ignorant at worst.

I’ll start with the gotcha he seems most proud of, namely, that I stated in the Tucker interview that, in February 2019, federal judge Kenneth A. Marra ruled that federal prosecutors had engaged in a conspiracy with Jeffrey Epstein’s legal team to violate the rights of Epstein’s victims during the 2000s investigation that led to his initial arrest and conviction. Tracey pointed out that the word “conspire” does not appear in the judge’s ruling, and accused me of inventing the quote to twist the story in my preferred direction. He’s right, the judge did not use the word “conspire,” he merely ruled that that federal prosecutors had secretly colluded with Epstein’s legal team to conceal the details of Epstein’s non-prosecution agreement from his victims, in violation of the law and the victims’ rights. In sexual assault cases, prosecutors are required to inform victims of any preferential agreement with the accused, so that they can exercise their right to object to the agreement. It takes a lot of guts for a young girl to come out against an abuser, especially a billionaire whose walls are adorned with pictures of him cavorting with the rich and powerful. The law is designed so that victims who muster the courage to speak out are not surprised one day when they pass their abuser on the street, because the victim wasn’t informed that he’d cut a deal with the government. Federal prosecutors not only failed to inform the victims that they’d cut a deal with Epstein, they deceived and actively hid it from them at the request of Epstein’s legal team. Tracey says “Marra never accused the federal government of ‘conspiring’ with Jeffrey Epstein,” but leaves out what he did say:

Epstein’s counsel was aware that the Office was deliberately keeping the non-prosecution agreement (NPA) secret from the victims, and indeed, had sought assurances to that effect. After the NPA was signed, Epstein’s counsel and the Office began negotiations about whether the victims would be told about the NPA. It was a deviation from the government’s standard practice to negotiate with defense counsel about the extent of crime victims notifications.

So, I should have been more precise in my wording. The judge did not say they “conspired,” but merely that they secretly agreed to violate the law to deprive the victims of their rights. I want to be very clear here. This was not an oversight, and it did not happen by accident. The government broke the law and violated the victims’ rights as part of a secret agreement with Epstein’s lawyers, and actively deceived the victims about it. As Judge Marra wrote:

When the Government gives information to victims, it cannot be misleading. While the Government spent untold hours negotiating the terms and implications of the NPA with Epstein’s attorneys, scant information was shared with victims. Instead, the victims were told to be ‘patient’ while the investigation proceeded.

The non-prosecution agreement, you’ll recall, did not only cover crimes committed by Epstein. It committed the government to a promise not to prosecute anyone else involved in Epstein’s crimes, including any perpetrators or crimes that might be discovered later. Several victims had claimed to have been trafficked to others by Epstein, and rather than inform them that those other abusers had been given blanket immunity, the government told the victims to be “patient,” deliberately giving them the impression that the case was still being investigated, when in fact the deal had already been made.

I thought, this can’t be the best Tracey’s got. Surely, he is not hounding me, after I told him I was mourning an immediate family member, over the distinction between conspiring to violate the law and secretly colluding to violate the law? But it was. The rest of the questions were either related to this, or else were more nitpicking about wording. For example, I apparently said that Judge Marra’s 2019 ruling invalidated the 2007 non-prosecution agreement. I’m not a lawyer, and that wasn’t exactly right. It did not, by itself, invalidate the earlier deal, it merely said that the deal was made under illegal circumstances and got the ball rolling on its invalidation. That is why, just five months after Judge Marra’s ruling, prosecutors in the Southern District of New York filed new charges against Epstein, some of which were the exact same charges brought in 2007, which had stayed on the shelf until 2019 because they’d previously been covered under the non-prosecution agreement.

Tracey’s next objection is a fair one, but we simply disagree on the interpretation. Tracey wrote, “The only time Alex Acosta was ever asked directly about Epstein being an intelligence asset, he said ‘the answer is no.’” The first thing to point out is that Tracey is wrong - that was not the only time Acosta had been asked that question. During a news conference after Epstein’s 2019 arrest, Acosta was asked the same question. That’s a pretty easy “no,” if the answer is no, but here’s what a smirking Acosta said:

So, so there has been reported to that effect, and, and let me say, um, there’s been reporting to a lot of effects in this case, uh, not just now, but over the years, and, and again, I would, you know, I would hesitate to take this reporting as fact. This was a case that was brought by our office based on the facts. And I, I look at that reporting and others, and I can’t address it directly because of our guidelines, um, but I can tell you that a lot of reporting is just going down rabbit holes.

Um, OK? What would you think if you confronted your spouse after someone told you they’d been cheating, and instead of simply denying it, they hemmed and hawed and said, “So, so I… I’ve also heard things to that effect. I’ve heard a lot of things to a lot of effects. So many effects. And, I, you know, I would hesitate to necessarily take those things as fact. I can’t answer your question directly because of, um, guidelines, or something, but, um, but a lot of the things being said are just going down rabbit holes.”

In the example Tracey brought up, Acosta was not at a press conference, but across the table from an Inspector General investigating his handling of the case. Tracey relates the exchange accurately, noting that Acosta was asked if he had knowledge, at the time the deal was made, that Jeffrey Epstein was an intelligence asset, and that Acosta replied, “The answer is no.” Tracey thinks this means Acosta denied that Epstein was an intelligence asset, and that’s fine, it’s a fair interpretation if made in good faith, but I disagree. Understand that this is not an informal discussion. Acosta is under oath facing potential perjury charges (at a time when Democrats and their allies at the FBI & DOJ are actively hammering any Trump associates they can manage to trip up), and his lawyers are sitting right next to him, advising him on every answer to ensure they’re worded in a way to protect him from intentional or unintentional misinterpretation. Vicki Ward had reported that during Acosta’s vetting process prior to his appointment as Trump’s Secretary of Labor, Acosta had told interviewers that he’d been told to back off because Epstein belonged to intelligence. The Inspector General asked Acosta whether he had knowledge that Epstein was an intelligence asset, not whether he was told Epstein was an intelligence asset. The answer, under penalty of perjury, to whether he had knowledge of it, is no, because being told something is not the same as having knowledge of it. If police ask whether you have knowledge that someone had committed a crime, and you answer ‘yes’ because someone else told you they’d committed one, you would be speaking falsely, because you do not have knowledge of it, you have what amounts to hearsay. Acosta was not asked whether he was told Epstein belonged to intelligence, as Ward’s reporting insisted, but whether he had personal knowledge of it, and under the supervision and guidance of his lawyers, he truthfully answered ‘no.’ You might be asking why, if he really had been told Epstein belonged to intelligence, he didn’t just say, “Well, Mr. Inspector General, no, I don’t have personal knowledge of that, I was told by my bosses that he was an asset.” The answer is, when you are under oath and start wandering off the reservation answering questions that haven’t been asked, you open yourself up to new lines of questioning - “Who was your boss at the time?” “Well, here’s what he said, are you saying he’s lying?” - and any halfway decent lawyer is going to smash the button on your shock collar until you shut your mouth. You answer direct questions as accurately and concisely as possible so that your words cannot be brought back to haunt you at a later time. A former federal prosecutor, flanked by high-powered lawyers, answering questions under oath in a hostile political environment, would know that better than anyone. And look, the answer to whether Ward’s reporting about what Acosta said is true might be ‘no,’ but that’s not what he was asked, and it’s not what he answered.

I’ve already wasted enough of our time responding to someone I consider to be a classless, bad-faith actor, but the final objection is Tracey’s most egregious, and exposes him as someone who is either a liar or someone who hasn’t been following the case very closely. Tracey says that, under Acosta’s direction, federal prosecutors at the Southern District of Florida intervened in the Epstein case because they saw that Florida state prosecutors were mishandling it. In other words, the federal officials that gave Epstein and everyone associated with him blanket immunity for all crimes they may have committed, including ones yet to be discovered, and then deceived the victims about it in violation of the law, are the real heroes of the story. This is just factually wrong, and you don’t have to pore through obscure legal documents to know it. You can just watch the Netflix documentary series about Epstein, and you get it straight from the horse’s mouth. The feds did not proactively decide to intervene, the case was brought to them by the chief of the Palm Beach police department because he had lost trust in the state prosecutors handling it. The PBPD referred the case to the FBI and gave them what they had. The FBI identified at least 20 underage victims, and brought the case to the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida, where Assistant US Attorney Maria Villafaña picked it up. After months of investigation, Villafaña drew up a 60 count indictment against Epstein. Epstein’s lawyers then actively sought out Alex Acosta, and only then did he take an active part in the case. Villafaña saw the writing on the wall, and complained in an email to her superiors that she feared their office was “going down the same path that the State Attorney’s office had gone down.” She was rebuked for not knowing her place, and told that decisions were being made above her paygrade, and was threatened with professional consequences if she did not back down:

Both the tone and substance of your email are totally inappropriate… If the U.S. Attorney [Acosta] or the First Assistant [Sloman] desire to meet with you, they will let you know. Nor will I direct Epstein’s lawyers to communicate only with you… If you want to work major cases in the district you must understand and accept the fact that there is a chain of command — something you disregard with great regularity.

This was a major case for Villafaña, and one that was vividly present in her memory. She had spent months investigating it, and had dozens of on-the-record underage victims, but lawyers of the accused billionaire managed to go over her head and cut a deal with her bosses. It’s the kind of thing that sticks with a young prosecutor, and the memories were still raw years later, when she told the Office of Professional Responsibility of the experience. When Acosta was asked about these events, he claimed he couldn’t recall any of the details, but it’s all right there in the OPR report and the cited email chains, as well as in testimony from Villafaña and others.

That’s all the time I’m going to devote to it. I already knew Tracey was a low-class, tactless dirtbag, but I expected him to put a little more work into his “journalism” than this. From now on, I’m not doing anything but the next history episode, and, to be honest, it’ll be the same after that. I’m tired of politics, and of all this bad-faith, vulgar bickering. I’m tired of the nastiness, the hostility, the vulgarity. I’m tired of having to be exposed to people like Michael Tracey. I’ve let these people distract me way too much this year, but I’m done letting them drag me off course. The next time you hear from me will be with a post releasing the next episode of Enemy, and Michael, because I know a narcissist has to read every word written about him, the next time you hear from me will be… never.

The Martyr Made Substack is a reader-supported publication. He was making content on the topic back in the days when nobody had heard of Jeffrey Epstein - including me, and I’ve been on this story way longer than most. Ryan was banned from every platform imaginable - Facebook, Twitter, PayPal, crypto exchanges, even MySpace - for talking about this when there wasn’t even any public attention on the issue. When it comes to this topic, he’s the guy.

Fair warning. Some of you might have a personal problem with Ryan because of how strident he can be when talking about Israel, whether with regard to the Gaza conflict, the State of Israel’s influence in the US, and the connections of people like Jeffrey Epstein to Israeli intelligence. He goes hard, harder than me, and maybe too hard for some of you to bear. But, though he may be an anti-Zionist, he is not an antisemite. I’ve seen and heard him argue with real deal, rootin’ tootin’ antisemites who were upset at his insistence that this is about a destructive ideology, not any race or ethnic group. It’s July 4, which, as everyone learned in elementary school, was the famous day on which I was born in 1981. Every year, we do a birthday fundraiser for a women’s shelter called Kristina’s House of Hope. Over the last few years, we’ve raised tens of thousands of dollars, and helped raise KHOH from a rinky-dink operation to one that has served and helped hundreds of desperate women pick themselves up off the floor and restart happy and productive lives. I hope you guys will come through again. I’m shy about asking you guys for anything more than you’ve already given me, because I know I haven’t been as productive as usual recently. It’s been a tough year, and I’ll explain everything soon when the next episode of Enemy is finished. But this cause is important enough to overcome my shyness and ask anyway.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

I won’t take too much more of your time with this post, but please let me tell you a bit about KHOH. Earlier this year, I attended a fundraising dinner for KHOH and learned a lot more about the woman who runs it, as well as the women she serves. The founder knows what the women are going through, because she’s been there. Many years ago, she was homeless, drug-addicted, and desperate, but by the grace of God she saw the light and got her life back on track about twenty years ago. A few years back, her own 20-year-old daughter was having problems, and was tragically killed in a car accident. Rather than wallow in guilt or slip into depression, her mother decided to start a shelter that would help other women who needed it. She knew nothing about running a charity, nothing about running a shelter, navigating local government, or anything at all, really. She just knew that if she opened her doors, God would send women to her, and she would help them. At the dinner, I met and heard from several of the women who had been through KHOH. Their stories were harrowing. I heard stories of homelessness, prostitution (sometimes forced), abuse, addiction, often all began while they were still young girls who should have been playing with dolls. The women who show up to KHOH have tried every other avenue, and many of them were on the brink of suicide before God sent them there. These women, and hundreds of others like them, are now stable, sober, happy, and productive. Several of them now work with KHOH to counsel other women. It was one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen. If you’ve ever known anyone who was truly at rock bottom, you know what a miracle it is to see them make a full recovery. That is what KHOH does.

Every penny you donate goes straight into KHOH’s operations. The woman who runs it doesn’t even take a salary, even though running KHOH is her full-time vocation. We’ve been telling her that it’s OK to take at least some compensation for the work she puts in, but she refuses - and this is not a wealthy woman by any means. Your donations pay for clothes, food, toiletries, counseling, life skills & job training, addiction services, and other things that go directly to the women KHOH serves. I know these people well, and I can promise you that, 100%. There are a lot of problems in our society, and we all occasionally think “someone should really do something about that.” These are people who took that to heart, and they are doing something about it. So let’s help them do it.

I have started things off with a $2,500 donation, and I hope you will help to whatever extent you can.

There are a few ways you can donate.

For the next week, anyone who signs up for an annual subscription to this Substack ($50 p/year) will send half the subscription fee to KHOH.

Subscribe now

GoFundMe

GiveSendGo

Bitcoin address: 3JbQTMWgzEHt8wKxS5cCxG36ZvtXFCzphx

Thanks again everybody.
