Take your time with the new series and do it right. I want to see you vindicated. Given the levels of opposition you seem to be discovering, it needs to be done right. Everyone whining in your substack chat can learn a little patience. Thanks for everything you do!

Thanks for something to consume in the mean time…

I’m assuming Duncan will now give equal time to an “expert” with opposing views to satisfy Douglas.

"God has no social skills" vis-a-vis the Jessica Jones example, it one of the funniest and thought provoking hot takes I've heard in a long time. Bravo.

Well he was on his third blasphemy. And there's always someone to take umbrage whenever you put 'Christian' and 'myth' in the same sentence.

Damn Darryl, you were on fire in this one. I'm someone who was formerly Catholic in my early childhood and teenage years whose family decided to leave the Church and become 'independent' Christians(around the time Trump began running for office, strangely). From that point on, I strayed from my parents 'new way of thinking' and abandoned biblical texts all together. Not out of spite or a new found nihilism, but a sense of relief. I found Church excruciatingly boring and dull, and I saw Wednesday night Catholic class as more school, which already felt was prison, and a place that I had to go to as a pre-requisite to do things I actually wanted to do which at the time was play sports. I've never been an atheist, but I've also never been a devoted Christian who prays, I guess I'm just wandering, not really sure what to make of it all, while also never feeling inspired enough to go do the work myself. Anyway, for someone who has only been thinking about Christianity 'part-time' for a while, whenever you begin riffing on it I can't help but feel so inspired to go do the work myself, and to re-visit these texts. The perspective you bring makes my inner Christian come alive for some strange reason. Reading the bible has always been something I have aimed to do before I die(I'm only 24), and your jamming with Duncan has greatly inspired me to blow the dust off my Bible and set-forth. Thank you DC, appreciate your work!

Thank you for these religious episodes man. I’m a paid subscriber because I love your work, but your religious episodes make me stop work and really start thinking.

“The devil moves in crowds, God speaks to us individually” 🤯

Reminds me of the scene in Passion where you do in fact see the devil moving through a crowd.

That's not a universal truth however. The Church is a crowd whether we like it or not and the Devil certainly hates it. I'd argue the devil works mainly on us individually by separating us from the pack like a lion does with a herd of wildebeest in Africa. Lions don't go after the strong in the middle of the herd either, they go after those on the edges, the distracted, the hobbled, those who lost track of where they were. Scripture refers to Satan explicitly as being like a lion, "Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.”

‭‭1 Peter‬ ‭5‬:‭8‬ ‭ESV‬‬

So no, actually, I'd say it's the converse to that quote more often than not. The devil lures us away by our pride in our intellect or understanding, away from the pack who would tell us to shut the hell up with our nonsense and wake up, and seduces us into believing we are the special, the chosen one unlike the rest. We truly understand unlike all the other lemmings. Oh yes, they're all fools but we are wise. That's horse shit. And that prideful thinking becomes like "The Precious" was to Gollum and then you won't listen to anything someone tells you. That's the most dangerous place you can possibly be in life. Be warned. Find a pack of Christians (aka a church that believes the Bible is inerrant and has accountability for its leaders) who are serious about faith in Jesus, who are faithful - not perfect, and listen twice as much as talk.

In either A History of God or one of Bart Ehrman's books, I read that the Book of Job is actually the oldest book in the Bible. If true, that makes it even more interesting that it's last in the Torah.

Hi Darryl, thanks for everything you do!

In the interview, you mentioned “A Vision” and as a fine synchronicity, John Michael Greer is just starting to go through that book bit by bit in his blog here https://www.ecosophia.net/a-vision-preliminaries/

You may enjoy the deep dive.

Be well,

Matt

Nah, Dave pretty much handled it, and the best response I could have to Douglas was just to let him keep talking.
