Tim Contoveros asks: The biggest thing that confuses me about WW1 is what exactly drove the countries involved to keep fighting it once they realized it was going to be so brutal. What were the leaders thinking? Because it seems to me that after the Germans’ initial offensive stalled, for several years all that was happening was millions of people were being sent to their deaths for... a better post-war negotiating position?
